Aim:
- To stop &/or prevent gum disease
How:
We will
- Explain and illustrate your existing gum problem
- Undertake gum “scoring” to establish the current level of disease - plaque, bleeding, recession
- Establish an appropriate Home-Care Programme
- Clean and polish above the gum-line
- Help motivate YOU to carry out good Home-Care
Visit 1
- An explanation of the problem - with illustrations of your mouth
- The level of disease is measured – using a plaque count* and bleeding score* *
- Home-Care Instruction (step 1) - toothbrush technique, type of toothbrush (electric and/or manual), size and shape
- Scaling (cleaning) of teeth
Visit 2
- Plaque score and bleeding score to monitor the progress of your Home-Care Instruction (step2) -
- Review toothbrush technique, instruct in use of floss, type of floss, general advice on home-care products (other cleaning aids and rinses) Completion of scaling and polishing of teeth above gum-line
- Establish maintenance follow-up***
The Level of disease at any one time is measured by
- A plaque count = the amount of plaque measured on your teeth and expressed as a % score
- A bleeding score = the amount of bleeding from the gums also expressed as a % score
- The aim is to achieve a maximum 10% plaque level and 0% bleeding level.
At the routine maintenance follow-up visit (e.g. 3/4/6 monthly, hygiene review) the following is carried out:
- A plaque count and bleeding score
- A re-evaluation of your gum condition
- A review of your Home-Care techniques
A scaling and polishing maintenance follow-up
